Choosing Reference Tracks
Why References Matter: They help me understand your vision faster than words can. "I want it punchy" means different things to different people. But "punchy like this track" is crystal clear.
How to Choose:
Pick 2-3 songs that capture the vibe you want
Don't pick your favorite songs—pick ones that match YOUR song's energy
Mix genres if it helps (indie vocals + electronic production + rock dynamics)
Be specific: "I like how the bass sits in this mix" vs "I like everything"
What to Avoid:
References that sound nothing like your song
Too many references (confusing, not helpful)
"Make it sound like [artist]" without specificity
References from different eras (2024 pop ≠ 1970s rock production)
How to Communicate:
"I love how the vocal cuts through in [Song]"
"The drum sound on [Track] is the vibe I want"
"Not this bright, more like [Reference]"
